One Day to Go!

Although The Chess Knights will not be completely ready by August 15, I have decided to open the site on that date, sometime in the evening. When the site is back online and open to members, you will see registration links in the menu at the top of the page, along with a login box.

Basically, the areas not yet ready are Languages, the teams competition area, Live Games, News (a new feature), and the Player League (another new feature). There may also be a few display problems with some of the pages. Rest assured, however, that most of the unfinished areas will be updated and/or added within a week.

Regarding Teams, when I open the site, you will be able to form teams and add team members. However, please do not start any team matches until I finish the Teams League feature (more on this later).

Areas which are functioning: Casual Games, Round Robin tournaments, Swiss Tournaments (Swiss Tournaments is working overall; I will, however, be adding a few features to swiss tourneys in the coming days), forums, private messaging, Challenges, and several other features.

One major departure from the ‘old’ site is the fact that the phpNuke cms will no longer be used on the new site. You will find that the site is much faster as a result.

As I said above, the site will not be completely ready. However, the basic functions are working, and I will not delay any longer in opening the site to my new and old chess friends. I hope to see everyone soon!

This site is, more than anything else, my personal blog. On this site I will publish my thoughts and feelings about a number of chess-related topics, including articles relating to my play site, which can be seen here:

Paul Morphy was known as “The Pride and Sorrow of Chess,” and was generally considered to have been the strongest chess master of his time and an unofficial World Champion.

Morphy is considered the first modern player. He played open games almost to perfection, but he also could handle any sort of position, having a complete grasp of chess that was years ahead of his time. Morphy was a genius who intuitively knew what was best, and in this regard he was much like Capablanca. He was, like Capablanca, a child prodigy.

Play Site Update

Hello Knights!

This is a brief update to let you know how things are going.

As you know, the playsite at chess-knights.com
will re-open on August 1, 2008.

As things are shaping up, please understand that all areas of that site may not be what it was before.

However, I will open on August 1, even if I do not get all the areas updated by then.
What I WILL promise is that you will be able to play games, even if such things as help files, forums, etc. are not completely set up at that time.

Currently, I have the site’s basic framework set up. This includes the chess server software. Games are now ‘playable,’ but each of the chess server files will have to be edited for language and proper formatting so the displays will look good.

Changes from the ‘Old’ Site:

Tournaments: When we re-open on August 1, Tournaments will have two main options:

1. Round Robin (4-player) Tourneys. 16-player tourneys will no longer be offered.
2. Swiss Tournaments. This option is new, and appears to be working fine, EXCEPT for the fact that two players are sometimes paired twice in the same tournament. For example, player Nelson and player Chui play in the first round. Then in the third round, these two players are again paired against one another. This is a bug, since players SHOULD only play one another once in a swiss-style tournament. Hopefully, this will be resolved by the time we re-open the site.

Live Games: Live games will be offered when we re-open. These will be unrated, but will have their own ranking, which will be based on points won: 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss.

Teams: Teams play will be organized by LEAGUE. I have not yet started this yet, but it should also be ready by August 1. I WILL tell you, however, that more than one league will be offered. :)

All in all, things are going well, and the site will be ready insofar as chess play is concerned. I will continue to post updates on this blog site as necessary, so that everyone will be informed as to the progress of the rebirth of the play site. :)
